You will face 115 uneven stone steps and strong coastal winds when visiting Hook Lighthouse. Dressing appropriately keeps you safe and comfortable during the 45-minute guided tour. Here is what you need to know before you arrive.

What kind of shoes do I need?

You must wear flat, comfortable walking shoes.

The tower has 115 well-worn, uneven spiral steps. High heels or loose sandals are not safe for this climb. The medieval stone staircase turns anti-clockwise inside walls up to 4 meters thick, so stable footing is essential.

Do I need a jacket inside the lighthouse?

Yes, bring warm clothing layers.

Even in peak summer, the 13th-century limestone walls remain chilly. Temperatures inside the monk's chamber and William Marshal's chamber are often lower than outside. Wearing a few layers allows you to adjust as you climb.

What should I wear for the viewing balcony?

A windproof jacket or coat is highly recommended.

The balcony sits 35 meters (115 feet) high at the tip of the Hook Peninsula. The sea breeze off the Celtic Sea is exceptionally strong up there. A good windbreaker stops the chill while you take in the 360-degree views.

What else should I pack for the weather?

Bring rain gear and sunglasses.

Irish weather changes quickly. Pack an umbrella or a rain jacket for the walk from the car park to the visitor centre. Conversely, bring sunglasses or a sun visor to handle the glare reflecting off the sea on bright days.

What accessories are useful to carry?

Bring a camera and a reusable water bottle.

You will want a camera or smartphone to capture the views from the top. A water bottle is useful before or after the climb to stay hydrated. Tower tours are paid and run by Hook Heritage; check hookheritage.ie for current prices.

Yes. Appropriate footwear must be worn to safely navigate the spiral staircase. Flat, closed-toe walking shoes are required.

Do I need to carry my tickets?

You need to check in at the visitor centre reception at least 15 minutes before your pre-booked tour. Having your booking confirmation handy saves time.

Is there somewhere to buy hot drinks if I get cold?

Yes. The Lighthouse Cafe, located in the former lightkeepers' dwellings, serves hot drinks and baked goods.
